Tournament Recaps

The WPGA Stableford Classic was back on the schedule Tuesday, after a successful debut in 2021. Another exciting day of golf was on tap, as the players would look to ratchet up their aggressive play with the stableford format. Playing host to this year’s event was Old Hickory GC in Beaver Dam. The old-school course would be the ideal host, with plenty of birdies and eagles available throughout.

It always seems to come down to the short game when Wisconsin’s biggest golf tournaments are held at Ozaukee CC in Mequon, a woodsy 100-year-old golf course known its slick, contoured putting surfaces. Those green complexes went a long way toward determining another champion this week at Ozaukee CC, where Daniel Mazziotta won the Wisconsin State Open in a three-hole sudden-death playoff Wednesday evening after the sun had already set.

After just about the three months of action the WPGA Match Play Championship would come to a close on Monday. Kicking off in early May with two days of play, the remaining foursome would return to close things out at the site where the journey began. Monday’s play would feature the semifinals in the morning and the final match around lunch time.

It was another great day for golf as the Wisconsin PGA four-player pro-am series made its annual stop at Destination Kohler on Monday. This year’s event would bring together 29 teams to enjoy the always fun and challenging Irish Course at Whistling Straits. It would mark the fourth year in the past nine that the Pete Dye design has hosted a Wisconsin PGA pro-am.

The 2022 Wisconsin Senior PGA Professional Championship would wrap up on Tuesday afternoon. It was an eventful two days of golf as the players had their hands full with mother nature. Between the windy and humid conditions and multiple weather delays, it truly was a mental and physical grind.

The 2022 National Car Rental Wisconsin Assistant PGA Professional Championship came to a close just in the nick of time on Monday. With severe weather approaching the last putt would be holed and a champion crowned. The field was made up of twenty-five WPGA professionals. Over the course of their 36-hole day they would face very humid and breezy conditions.

After a three-week break the WPGA four-player pro-am series was back on course with the Janesville CC Pro-Am. The fifth event of the series would give the sold-out field a chance to tackle the oldest country club in the state. The always challenging layout would again put a premium on ball striking with the small tricky greens at Janesville CC. 

The fight for the Wisconsin PGA Player of the Year title was back front and center on Monday at the Russ Darrow Automotive Group Classic. The third one-day WPGA classic of the year would feature a trip to The Bull at Pinehurst Farms. The challenging layout would give the field of forty-three WPGA professionals quite the battle throughout the day. Adding to the difficulty was swirling gusty winds. 

Making its annual appearance on the Wisconsin PGA tournament calendar on Monday was the always fun Double Dip Pro-Am. A participant favorite, the event always delivers an exciting day with plenty of action. This year’s edition was title sponsored by X Golf Madison & Middleton for a second straight year, while playing host was the highly rated Wild Rock Golf Club. 

Emily Lauterbach won her second Sentry Wisconsin State Women’s Open title in the last three years on Thursday, but this one felt a lot different than the first one in 2020.

First, as Lauterbach pointed out at a brief awards ceremony Thursday afternoon, this year’s victory was a particular source of pride for her because her first State Women’s Open win in 2020 came on her home course, The Legend at Brandybrook in Wales.
