The regular season of the WPGA Four-Player Pro-Am Series concluded on Monday evening at the University Club of Milwaukee. In mid-September you never know what you’re going get weather wise but Monday sure was a good one. The summer like conditions had everyone in a great mood and excited to be teeing it up.

Mick Smith is on some kind of roll late in the 2024 Wisconsin competitive golf season – a fact that the Australia native proved once and for all Tuesday in the final round of the Wisconsin PGA Professional Championship.

It has been another busy week of Wisconsin PGA tournaments. We take a look back to Tuesday and the return of our Assistant Professional Fall Classic.

If you weren’t there to see the shots and just looked at the hole-by-hole scores in the final round of the 40th Wisconsin State Senior Open, you might conclude that Mick Smith simply outlasted the competition and was the last man standing.

If he hadn’t broken his collarbone while playing junior hockey in the eighth grade, who knows where Max Lyons would be today? Back then, when he was playing travel baseball and Elite AAA hockey with the Jr. Coyotes in Phoenix, golf was something he did with his father on Sunday evenings. Nine holes. Twilight rates at a local course.

The two-event Wisconsin PGA Pro-Ladies series would come to a close on Monday. As the final event would venture to Madison and Blackhawk CC. After a five-player event in the spring at The Legend at Bristlecone, the summer version would feature four-player teams. 

The Wisconsin PGA Four-Player Pro-Am Series would make its annual pilgrimage to Destination Kohler on Monday. It marked the tenth time that the series has been fortunate to enjoy the hospitality and service of the five-star resort. Once again the most popular pro-am on the WPGA schedule would feature a sold-out field with several teams on the waitlist.

It hasn’t taken long for Michael Nagy to leave his mark on the Wisconsin PGA tournament scene. After moving to the area earlier this year to take on an assistant and teaching professional role at TPC Wisconsin, the Manistique, Michigan native has shown that he has the game to compete with the best professionals in the section.

There’s a path – winding though it is – that connects this week’s Wisconsin Senior PGA Professional Championship and the Senior PGA Championship, one of senior golf’s majors. Mick Smith successfully traveled that path recently, and on Tuesday afternoon he looked primed to do it again.

The National Car Rental Wisconsin Assistant PGA Professional Championship is a little tournament with big repercussions, where one 36-hole day of golf determines the players who will represent Wisconsin in the National Assistant Championship.
