For the duo of Andy Podolak and David Roesch, their pro-pro success on Monday was just like riding a bike. The old friends had not teamed up in the Spring Pro-Pro Better Ball since 2018, but it didn’t take very long before they were near the top of the leaderboard.
After playing the first four holes in 1-over-par, their round would get jumpstarted on the Par-4 5th. Both players would go on to make birdie, getting the team back to even-par. Then a birdie out of Roesch on the 6th, and back-to-back birdies from Podolak on the 7th and 8th would follow. All of sudden Podolak and Roesch were right in the mix as they made the turn.
On a day where the gusty winds were the number one storyline, the teammates knew a few more birdies on the back might just get the job done.
The back-nine featured more ham and egging out of the twosome. Roesch would start and finish the back nine with birdies, while Podolak would add his own on the par-4 12th and par-5 15th. With just a lone bogey on the 13th, they backed up their front nine 33 with the same score on the back.
Their 6-under-par 66 would set the pace and ultimately be good enough for a two shot win. Four teams would try to chase them down but come up short. Finishing in a tie for second place were Andy Hansen/Keith Buntrock, Craig Czerniejewski/Mick Smith, Chris Zachman/Drew Zimmerman and David Bach/Josh Grisa.
It was the second Spring Pro-Pro Better Ball title for Podolak and Roesch, as they also were victorious in 2017.
In addition to the battle for the title, the day also featured some secondary contests. One of those was qualifying for the Four-Ball Match Play. Teams had to opt in to the contest and fortunately they didn’t have to beat Podolak and Roesch to claim a spot. Forty-one of the fifty-two teams would attempt to qualify, with thirty-two spots up for grabs.
The bracket will be officially rolled out later this week. Teams will then arrange matches throughout the season until a champion is crowned in late September/early October.
Also on the line were closest the pin contests on each of the par 3s. The players would see who could take home a Blue Tees Golf Player Plus Speaker / GPS unit by hitting it close. The winners were:
#4 – Peter Nomm
#8 – Wyatt Wilderman
#13 – Cameron Gomez
#17 – Tyler Wood
The WPGA would like to express our appreciation to the trio of event partners that helped make it a great day. Harris Golf Cars, AndersonOrd and Blue Tees Golf were a key part of the event and their contributions gave everyone plenty of value for their buck.
A big thank you out also goes out to everyone at West Bend CC. The club was a welcoming host and the course received numerous compliments on the conditioning and layout.
