A cool and rainy day greeted the twenty participants of the annual Royal Cup Matches on Friday. The Ryder Cup style exhibition matches pit the top WPGA Assistant Professionals vs the top IPGA Assistant Professionals in a one day four ball match play event. The Wisconsin PGA was looking to earn their third victory in a row after posting wins at Big Foot CC and Lake Shore CC the last two years. Standing in the way of the extension of their winning streak was a quality IPGA squad and the challenging Milwaukee CC layout.
The day featured some great golf, camaraderie and competition. The WPGA squad showed up to play from the start, as they grabbed a two point lead on the front nine. The five WPGA two-player teams combined to make seventeen birdies on the front to help propel them to that margin. The play on the front proved to be the exact winning margin in the end as the remaining 10 points were split between the two teams. When all the matches were completed the WPGA has earned a 8.5 to 6.5 point win.
Highlighting the play for the WPGA squad and sweeping all three points in their match was the duo of Mick Smith and Evan Wartgow.
The WPGA would like to recognize Sun Mountain Sports for providing the team apparel and also OMEGA watches for helping support this year’s matches.
A big thank you also goes out to the membership and staff at Milwaukee CC for being a gracious host.
