A spot on the coveted Manuel de la Torre was up for grabs once again on Monday, as the annual Wisconsin PGA Pro-Assistant visited Westmoor Country Club. It marked the fourth time that the Brookfield club has hosted the event but the first since 1986.
The sold-out field of 113 players, representing 33 different facilities, would be treated to a beautiful fall day.
The traditional division of play would feature 61 teams on Monday, with professionals able to play on multiple teams if they were eligible. The two-player teams in the primary division would consist of a head professional, director of golf or individual in general management, paired up with an eligible assistant professional or PGA associate from their facility.
The second division would be comprised of 24 other teams, which featured two professionals working for the same company or facility, regardless of their PGA classification. The division gives professionals a chance to participate that might not otherwise have the chance to do so.
With play starting on both nines, the first few hours of the event would see a logjam of teams at the top. The layout was holding its own and not allowing anyone in division one to jump out a multi-shot lead.
That was until the Whistling Straits duo of Mike Aschenbach and David Bach caught a wave of momentum starting on their 11th hole. On the par-4 2nd, Aschenbach would roll in a massive 70-foot birdie putt to put a jolt into his group. Then Bach would drain his own long birdie on the very next hole.
With two more birdies on no. 4 and 6, the twosome was off to the races. That was until two-time champions Dan Hastreiter and Josh Grisa put up three birdies in a four-hole stretch, playing two groups behind them.
The challenge was short lived though as Bach would throw a pitching wedge to 10 feet on the par-5 8th and roll in an eagle. With a closing birdie by Aschenbach on the par-5 9th, the winning squad posted a 9-under-par 62 better ball.
It would be good enough to hold off Hastreiter and Grisa by two shots in the end. The impressive score matched the lowest known score on record in the event’s history.
Putting up a solid 5-under-par 66 and earning the win in division two was the Golf Galaxy duo of Foy Swenson and Brian Brodell. They ended up going bogey-free on the day, helping them secure a three-shot win in the secondary contest.
In addition the day also featured some proxy contests on par 3s. Taking home a new Wingman Mini from Bushnell Golf were:
#3 – Andy Barrett
#5 – Jamie Christianson
#14 – Jamie Chrstianson
#17 – Scott Walecki
The Wisconsin PGA would like to thank our event partners that helped make Monday’s event possible. Jumping on board and supporting this year’s Pro-Assistant was Bushnell and the PGA Tour.
We’d also like to recognize and thank the membership and staff at Westmoor Country Club for hosting. The course was in great shape and held up unbelievably well to the three inches of rain it received the day prior.
