For the third year in a row the WPGA would kick off the month of June with a pro-am stop at The Club at Strawberry Creek. The site has gained in popularity quickly and established itself as a must play for the regulars on the pro-am circuit. This year’s X Golf Strawberry Creek Pro-Am would sell out in just four minutes after registration opened on April 1.
The lucky individuals that gained a spot in the field would enjoy some terrific weather and pristine course conditions. The course played firm and fast, exactly the way it was designed.
Jumping out to a hot start in the 1,2,3 net best ball team contest was the Matt Sabol led squad. Sabol, his dad Brian, Andy Karow, and Dave Jozwiak, would quickly grab the attention of the field. They would go an amazing 16-under-par on their first nine holes. Sabol would lead the way during this stretch, as he would card two eagles and go 7-under-par on his own ball. The lead almost seemed insurmountable at that point; however the back-nine would be a different story.
As the group started to make more pars and less birdies, the Ryan Helminen led Ridgeway CC team would close the gap. Eventually the Helminen led group would get within striking distance and on their final hole the entire team would make natural birdies. With the hole being a par-5, they would go 4-under-par on the three balls that were required to count. The strong finish would propel them an 18-under-par 134 total, good enough to tie the Sabol led team.
The Sabol squad would however get the last laugh though, as they’d take home the champion trophies via a scorecard playoff. During their hot stretch of play they carded net 6 team score on hole no. 9, which was one better than the Helminen squad.
With their play the two teams would also punch their ticket into the Oliphant Golf Management Pro-Am Championship. Finishing just two shots back and earning the third and final spot was the Victor Jacinto led Tuckaway CC foursome.
The low professional stableford event would also be tightly contested. David Bach and Joe Leonard would put up a barrage of birdies on their way to tying for the top spot. Each professional would card a 4-under-par 68, helping them earn 40 stableford points.
In the over 50 crowd, Michael Crowley and Mark Voeller would tie for first with even-par 72s and 36 stableford points.
For the third straight pro-am the day featured some action on the par 3s for the amateur contestants. Hitting it tight and taking home some great prizes from X Golf Milwaukee and Tito’s were:
#4 – Jamie Ireland
#8 – John Mueller
#12 – Matt Witon
#15 – Tony Smith
The WPGA would like to express our appreciation to all our event partners from Monday. X Golf Milwaukee (Brookfield, Mequon, AmFam Field & Appleton), Harris Golf Cars, and Tito’s Vodka, did a great job of enhancing Monday’s pro-am.
In addition, we’d like to thank everyone at The Club at Strawberry Creek for being a gracious host. The club always does a terrific job of showcasing their facility.
