THE LEGEND CHALLENGE
SCRATCH PRO-AM
EVENT PARTNERS

(Garrett Jones and Erik Stenseth)

The 16th playing of The Legend Challenge – Scratch Pro-Am made its usual late May appearance on Tuesday. Once again the two-player better ball event brought together some of the top amateurs and professionals throughout the state.

A sold-out field of 56 twosomes would be competiting for this year’s title. It marked the fourth straight year the event has sold out, with this year’s version selling out in record time.

Taking its turn and hosting this year’s event was The Legend at Bristlecone in Hartland.

A finely conditioned golf course and winds out of the east produced some great scoring conditions on Tuesday. Twenty-nine teams would break par in a battle of who could go the lowest.

Throughout the the day the fight for the lead was tight. As the day wore on two of the top amateurs in the field would get red hot and lead their squads to the top of the board. Garrett Jones would be the first show off his skills. He would start play on hole no. 8 and then rattle five birdies and an eagle on the back-nine. The stretch would push Jones and Erik Stenseth out to the lead as they made the turn with seven holes left to play.

Six-time champion Jack Schultz would provide plenty of pressure though as he would almost match Jones back-nine. Starting on hole no. 2, Schultz’s run of birdies and eagles didn’t take place until later in his round. He would pile up four birdies and an eagle during his run on the back and it would put Schultz and David Roesch squarely in the mix.

Jones however would keep pace with an eagle on the par-5 3rd, and then with the event on the line a clutch birdie on the par-5 7th would clinch the win. On his own ball Jones shot 63.

With the help of Stenseth the duo would card a 10-under-par 61, good enough to deliver them a one shot win over Roesch and Schultz. The score marked the second lowest gross total in the history of the event and gave the duo their second straight win at The Legend Challenge.

A big thank you goes out to Premier Golf & Utility Vehicles, Elijah Craig and the PGA Tour for their sponsorship of Tuesday’s tournament. Their support helped make sure the event was a great success. In addition, the WPGA would like to express its gratitude to everyone at The Legend Clubs for providing a first-class experience for all the attendees.
