After a soggy month of June, the Wisconsin PGA and all the golf courses in the state were ready for a fresh start with the calendar flipping over to July. One of the casualties of the inclement weather in June was the playing of the Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley Pro-Am at Bishops Bay CC. Originally scheduled for Monday, June 3, the day was derailed by afternoon storms.

Fortunately, just four weeks later the club would welcome the event back on July 1. Another sold-out field of twenty-nine teams would enjoy a picture-perfect day.

On the course the teams would have great course conditions to go along with the weather. The combination of factors would play right into the hands of one of the teams from the home club. The foursome of John Shipshock, Jason Hatch, Jerin Zander and Shawn Kriewaldt would make the membership proud, as they’d secure a two-shot win over the Andy Hansen led University Club group.

Their 21-under-par 131 total in the 1,2,3 net best ball format was steady the whole way around. They would not play one hole over par and the par 5s would also be a huge factor. On the four par 5s they would go 11-under-par.

The win marked the second straight season that Shipshock has led a Bishops Bay group to a win on their home course. Last year he took home the Spring Pro-Ladies title with the help of his four lady amateurs.

The Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley Pro-Am victory gives the Bishops Bay CC foursome a berth into the Oliphant Golf Management Pro-Am Championship. They will be joined in the field by Hansen’s team and another Bishops Bay CC squad, which was led by Kyle Kroener.

In the low pro stableford game the trio of John Knoll, Kroener, and Joe Leonard would lead the way. Each player carded an impressive 3-under-par 69 to give them 39 stableford points.

Earning the low senior pro contest honors was David Roesch with 38 stableford points.

In addition to the three main contests the day would also feature some fun proxy contests on the par 3s for the amateurs. Taking home some great prizes via the Suter Ward Group and Tito’s were:

#3 – Jon Borgen, #8 – Dave Massey, #10 – Luke Wainwright, #17 – Kasey Kinney

The WPGA would like to express our gratitude to all our event partners. Leading the way was title sponsor, The Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley and Vince Suter. Their support helped make a huge difference in the day. We’d also like to recognize supporting partners, the American Family Insurance Championship, the Wisconsin State Golf Association and Tito’s Vodka.

A big thank you also goes out to the membership and staff at Bishops Bay CC. The event marked the third straight year that the club has hosted some form of a Wisconsin PGA Pro-Am. We truly appreciate their willingness to reschedule the event and continue to provide a great venue for the WPGA.
