Andy Hansen & Andrew Troyanek
After forty plus events the 2023 Wisconsin PGA tournament season came to a close on Monday. From mid-March until mid-October the WPGA conducted a wide range of event offerings, which were attended by WPGA members and associates plus amateurs and unaffiliated professionals.
Over 3,300 participants teed it up along the way, with more than seventy-five of them being recognized as champions with trophies from Sterling Cut Glass.
After the second week of May the season featured a great run of weather, with only a few delays impacting play.
Monday’s finale would feature the playing of the Fall Pro-Pro Scramble at Hartford GC. The WPGA two-player scrambles have had their weather issues of late. The in-state WPGA schedule for the past six years have been bookended by two scrambles. Monday’s contest would be just the third scramble event completed in the past four years.
It would turn out to be a cold but playable day on Monday. Teams would look to stay warm as they tried to go low. With drivable par 4s and reachable 5s at Hartford GC, the winning mark would surely be double digits under-par.
Finding their way to the magical mark of 10-under-par were two teams. Setting the pace was a twosome of former champions of both the spring and fall scramble. Mick Smith and Mark Voeller would go out early and make eight birdies and an eagle on the par-5 10th. Their bogey free 62 would sit on top of the leaderboard for about an hour and a half until another duo matched it.
Andy Hansen and Andrew Troyanek would put up a strong final nine holes to match Smith and Voeller. They would get hot and finish up their round with a 6-under-par 30 on the back-nine. A clutch birdie on the par-4 18th would close out their 62 and give them a share of the title.
The co-champions would each take home $575 per player for their efforts.
As for the coveted Sterling Cut Glass hardware, Hansen and Troyanek would secure the trophies via a scorecard playoff. The deciding factor would be a birdie on the second hardest handicap hole.
In addition to the standard scramble format the day also featured a fun Total Driving Contest from event sponsor Evolve Golf. The contest took into account both distance and accuracy to determine the winners.
Taking home the top three spots and a little extra cash were:
1st – Joe Scherer
2nd – Matt Sabol
3rd – Jonathan Stuart
The WPGA would like to express our appreciation to Antigua, Evolve Golf and Sterling Cut Glass. The trio of companies provided some great enhancements to the day. Their contributions ensured that all the attendees got plenty of value for their entry fee.
We’d also like to thank Hartford GC and their staff for hosting. The club has hosted multiple pro-pros throughout the years and we greatly appreciate them taking the opportunity to do so once again.
