The WPGA wrapped up the regular season of its 4-player pro-am series on Monday. The eighth and final event brought a field of 27 teams up to Door County to enjoy the challenging and scenic Horseshoe Bay Golf Club. The fescue lined fairways and greens were in terrific shape, and the only negative to the day was the windy and rainy conditions that accompanied the players at times.
Navigating the weather and the golf course the best was the foursome of Brian Brodell, John Lukas, Joe Dias and Paul Kundinger. The X Golf Mequon and Butte des Morts CC team put together an impressive 16-under-par 128 total in the one net / one gross best ball event. With the difficult conditions they amazingly put together a round that did not include any holes played over par. The score was good enough to win by one shot over the Michael Crowley led Morningstar GC team.
With both of the aforementioned professionals having already qualified for the Oliphant Golf Management Pro-Am Championship, there were three spots up for grabs on Monday. Earning spots in the October 4 event was the Joe Wood, Rob Elliott and Dean Mehlberg led teams.
Taking home the low professional contest on Monday was Ryan Helminen. The Appleton native was able to post a 2-under-par 70 to hold off Crowley by one shot. Crowley would however get a consolation prize as he would win the low senior professional division.
A big thank you goes out to everyone at Horseshoe Bay GC for being a great host site. The club presented a well conditioned golf course, and made sure all the attendees were given first class service.
