(Kurt Mantyla, Mick Smith and Jim Gaugert of Harris Golf Cars)
The inaugural Wisconsin PGA Senior / Junior Better Ball made its debut on Sunday afternoon. The new addition to the tournament schedule brought together a field of WPGA members, associates and pre-associates to tee it up at Meadowbrook CC in Racine. The better ball event would feature teams that were made up of one WPGA member, associate or pre-associate 50 or older, and one that was 49 or younger. The teams would also tackle the old school layout from varying lengths as the junior men, senior men and junior women all had different sets of tees assigned to them.
In the end the duo that was closest in age would find their way to the top of the leaderboard. 48-year-old Mick Smith and 51 year-old Kurt Mantyla took advantage of eight birdies and one eagle to card a 10-under-par 61. They started on fire as they went 4-under-par on their first first holes. Included in that stretch was the eagle by Smith, as he holed out from 58 yards with a lob wedge on the par-4 5th. Finishing just three shots back after a hot back nine was the twosome of Jim Gaugert and Daniel Romero. For the victory Mantyla and Smith will each take home $550.
The WPGA would like to thank Harris Golf Cars, Homestretch Golf, and the Wisconsin State Golf Association for their support of the Senior / Junior Better Ball. With their support the WPGA was able to roll out another great pro-pro for the attendees to enjoy.
A great deal of appreciation also goes out to the members and staff at Meadowbrook CC. The WPGA would like to thank the club for hosting on a very busy weekend afternoon and making sure the players had a great experience.
