It hasn’t taken long for Michael Nagy to leave his mark on the Wisconsin PGA tournament scene. After moving to the area earlier this year to take on an assistant and teaching professional role at TPC Wisconsin, the Manistique, Michigan native has shown that he has the game to compete with the best professionals in the section.

Just two weeks ago the University of Tennessee graduate came up just short in a playoff at the National Car Rental Wisconsin Assistant PGA Professional Championship.

Then on the heels of that performance he would grab everyone’s attention at Monday’s Stableford Classic at University Ridge GC. Having only seen the course as a spectator and a coach, one would think it’d take some time to find the way around the Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout.

That ended up being far from the truth on Monday, as he scorched the front nine. Opening with a bogey-free 7-under-par 29. His five birdies on the opening stretch included a lengthy 30-foot putt on no. 1. He also would hole-out his greenside bunker shot on no. 7 for an eagle.

With the modified stableford scoring system that put an emphasis on birdies or better, Nagy had basically built up a lead at the turn that would be hard to match. His opening nine would give him 23 points and boost him into the top spot, where he would remain the rest of the round.

He’d cool down on the back-nine but his bogey-less golf would continue. With seven more pars and two birdies on two of the hardest holes on the back-nine, no. 10 and 17, he would pile up 36 total stableford points. The 9-under-par 63 marks one of the lowest rounds in recent memory in a Wisconsin Section one-day competition.

Finishing in a tie for second place was Michael Crowley and Jon Zellmer. Each individual ended up earning 27 points, after shooting matching 4-under-par 68s. Crowley’s mark ended up leading the way for the senior professional division.

A big thank you goes out to Monday’s event partners. With the help of the Wisconsin State Golf Association, TaylorMade Golf and Under Armour Golf, the players were treated to a great purse and a welcome gift.

The WPGA would also like to express our appreciation to former Wisconsin State Open host, University Ridge GC. The course was in terrific shape and it is always great to bring a WPGA event to the home of the Badgers.
