The Wisconsin PGA Four-Player Pro-Am Series was back in action on Monday after a four-week break. The resumption of the series was highlighted by trip to the Fox Valley and a stop at Green Bay Country Club for the first time since 2014.
The eleven-year hiatus built up plenty of demand, as nearly forty professionals expressed interest in playing when registration opened up on June 1.
The teams in the field would face with a challenging day, as they would be playing the one net one gross better ball format on the demanding Dick Nugent designed layout.
Finding the right balance between their net and gross scores and topping the leaderboard was the Ryan Helminen led group of Rick Chobar, Matt Butch and Scott Merzlicker. The foursome was able to card a 16-under-par 128 to get the win. They played rock-solid golf, as the team played fourteen holes under-par and only one hole over-par. They did just enough to get the win, holding off the two-time defending champions with Brian Brodell by one shot.
With their play the Helminen and Brodell squads grabbed a spot in the season-ending Oliphant Golf Management Pro-Am Championship. They’ll be joined by Michael Crowley, as his team earned the final spot after tying for third and winning a scorecard playoff.
In the low pro game, Brodell got some redemption as he earned the win with 39 stableford points. His 3-under-par 69 featured four birdies and just one bogey. The score was good enough to hold off Helminen and John Knoll by two points. Helminen did end up topping the leaderboard in the low senior stableford contest.
The day also featured some great prizes at stake for the amateurs on the par 3s. Knocking it close and taking home a new MG5 TaylorMade wedge were:
#4 – Tony Larsen
#8 – John Hemming
#11 – Danny Wolfe
#13 – Rick Gramza
A great deal of gratitude goes out once again to our event partners, TaylorMade Golf, Premier Golf & Utility Vehicles and Prestwick Golf Group. The trio of companies teamed up to present a fantastic day for all the participants.
The WPGA would also like to recognize and thank everyone at Green Bay CC. The course was in great shape and the event offered a nice opportunity for the club to showcase their renovated clubhouse.
