The WPGA Four Player Pro-Am Series made its second appearance in the month of June on Monday. A solid turnout of twenty-eight teams from throughout the section would make their way to The Bull at Pinehurst Farms.
It turned out to be another fantastic weather day and the field was greeted with superb course conditions at the Jack Nicklaus layout.
Although the players had those two factors in their favor, they still would have their hands full with one of the toughest courses in the state. Add in the fact that they were playing the one net / one gross best ball format, the field had their work cut out for them.
Taming The Bull to the best of their ability was the foursome of Ryan Helminen, Ze Vue, Scott Merzlicker and Matt Butch. The squad would card an impressive 16-under-par 128 score in the team format. On the difficult layout they only played two holes over par during their round. Butch would lead the way for the squad, as he would make three net eagles and two net birdies during his round.
The score turned out to be good enough to win by two shots over the Charlie Brown Geneva National squad. Helminen’s teams are off to a hot start in 2023, as they’ve finished T4, T1 and now a first-place finish in the four-player pro-am events.
Even though Brown’s team came up short of the title, they did earn one of the coveted spots in the Oliphant Golf Management Pro-Am Championship. Claiming the final two spots via a scorecard playoff were the Ryan Wagner and David Bach led groups.
Bach’s success would carry over into the low professional stableford contest. He would shoot an impressive 7-under-par 65, earning him 43 stableford points. Good enough for a three-point win over Brian Brodell.
In the over 50 professional crowd, Brown would lead the way with 38 stableford points.
The WPGA would like to express our appreciation to our event partners, the American Family Insurance Championship and AndersonOrd. The two entities provided some very nice enhancements to the day.
In addition, a great deal of gratitude goes out to everyone at The Bull. The course was in fantastic shape and the staff made sure that all the attendees received first class service throughout the day.
