A string of under-par rounds from University Club of Milwaukee Head PGA Professional Andy Hansen would continue this past Monday. After starting off the year with a runner-up finish at the WPGA Match Play Championship and two top-five finishes at the Memorial Classic and Hornung’s Classic, the UW-Parkside alum would get the job done.
He would cruise to a three-shot win in WPGA Classic #3 on the Links Course at The GC’s of Lawsonia, taking down the largest field to play in the event since 2007.
The key to his 6-under-par 66 would be his great play on the par 4s. Taking advantage of wedges from the fairway, by knocking it to within five feet on no. 8, 15 and 17. In total, he would card seven birdies and just one bogey on a day that provided terrific scoring conditions.
“Just trying to stay positive and present on each shot,” Hansen wrote via text about his start to the year. “I have made some changes to my practice and on course strategy. If I stick to those hopefully good things will continue to happen.”
Finishing in second place was Chris Zachman of Milwaukee Country Club with a 69. Rounding out the top five at 2-under-par 70 was Brian Brodell, Ryan Helminen, Mick Smith and Steven Young.
For Smith, his mark would help carry him to the low senior professional contest win.
The WPGA would like to thank the Wisconsin State Golf Association, Hole-In-One USA, and the PGA Tour for helping to enhance and support Monday’s event.
We’d also like to express our gratitude to everyone at The GC’s of Lawsonia. The club is always a willing host and does whatever is needed to make the day a success.
