With the golf season in full swing the Wisconsin PGA was back on course on Monday as The Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley Pro-Am visited The Club at Strawberry Creek. The always popular event and venue drew in another sold-out crowd of 116 players. The day also marked the third 4-player pro-am in the past four weeks, and gave teams another chance to grab a spot into the coveted Oliphant Golf Management Pro-Am Championship. From Chenequa CC to Trappers Turn GC, to Oneida G&CC, to Strawberry Creek, the event series has covered plenty of miles so far.
The far southeast corner of the state is not only a long ways from Oneida G&CC, but it also turned out to be just the right spot for weather on Monday. The event dodged the severe weather cells and teams had benign conditions to try to go low on Monday. Combined with the always fun yet challenging 1,2,3 net best format, the winning team was most likely going to be an impressive number.
That score turned out to be a 24-under-par 128 total, which was produced by Brian Brodell, Luke Witte, Gene Mussel and Ryan Tollaksen. The X Golf Mequon/North Shore CC/Meadowbrook CC group was on fire all day. They played 17 of their 18 holes under par. Their score was good enough to earn them a three shot win and a spot into the Oliphant Golf Management Pro-Am Championship.
Grabbing the other two pro-am championship spots were the David Roesch and David Bach led teams.
The team contest provided some fireworks but the best of the day was saved for David Bach of Whistling Straits. The recently elected PGA member took down the professional field with a 10-under-par 62. His round was highlighted by a twenty-nine on the front nine. He also was able to play the four par 5s in 6-under-par. Finishing just three shots behind Bach was Brodell.
Leading the low senior professional field was the duo of Charlie Brown and Michael Crowley. Each professional was able to card a 69.
The day also featured some fun closet to the pin contests sponsored by The Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley. Earning a dozen Pro-V1s were;
#4 – Nick Zellmer
#8 – Eric Johnson
#12 – Dave Bethel
#15 – Rich Blay
A big thank you goes out to The Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley for their support of the contests and the entire day. Once again with their support the WPGA was able to present a great pro-am for all the attendees.
Also deserving of recognition was the staff and members at The Club of Strawberry Creek. The club rolled out some terrific playing conditions and had all the bases covered as an event host.
