The WPGA Las Vegas Pro-Am came to a close late last week. It was a another terrific week of golf, fellowship, and a whole lot of fun. The field was fortunate to have a nice week of weather and the courses offered some great playing conditions. It marked the ninth straight year the event has featured at least 48 teams.

For the first time ever the tournament would feature two completely separate divisions of play. The sold-out 50-team field would be split in two divisions of twenty-five. Divisions were created by random draw during the 2024 WPGA Las Vegas Pro-Am entry lottery. An opportunity to feature some of the top private Las Vegas clubs in the course rotation was too good to pass up, which was the main reason why the event required two overall competitions.

The 2024 edition featured a return MGM Grand for the lodging. As for the golf, all 250 players would get the opportunity to play Cascata and Las Vegas CC.  The third course would differ though, the Diamond Division would feature the Jack Nicklaus designed SouthShore CC. On the other side of the draw the Hearts Division visited the Robert Trent Jones Sr and Jr. co-designed Southern Highlands GC.

Golfers from eleven different states partook in the trip, while the professional field featured forty PGA members and ten PGA associates.

With relatively calm conditions throughout the event the winning teams would have to go low to claim the titles this year. In the Hearts Division the Bisbee’s Golf Center team of Jeff Bisbee, Buzz Holland, JB Moseley, Jim Hanson and John Durkin would get the job done by a narrow one-shot margin over the Ryan Helminen led squad. They would card rounds of 121, 128 and 141 to accumulate a 50-under-par 390 total. The scores would produce second place daily finishes on the first two days and a seventh place finish on day three. It is the fourth title that a team from Bisbee’s Golf Center has won in the past 21 years. It also was the lowest three-round total by a winning team since 2018.

As for the Diamond Division the winning team would come from North Shore CC in Mequon. Joaquin Diaz would lead the team of Keith Llanas, Dave Riebau, Chad Sloden and John Francis to victory. Llanas would turn out to be the star of the week as he would contribute numerous net birdies and net eagles to the team score on all three days. Their scores of 134, 134 and 128 would give them a 42-under-par 396 total. The winning mark was good enough to hold on by four shots over the Dan Hastreiter and Ryan Ranguette led fivesomes.

The list of the daily team winners across the two groups were:

  • Hearts – Monday – Cascata – 2 Net – Ridgeway CC (Helminen)
  • Hearts – Tuesday – Southern Highlands – 1 Net / 1 Gross – Horseshoe Bay GC (Christianson)
  • Hearts – Wednesday – Las Vegas CC – 1,2,3 Net – Golf Galaxy Appleton (Brodell)
  • Diamond – Monday – SouthShore – 1 Net / 1 Gross – Blackwolf Run (Hastreiter)
  • Diamond – Tuesday – Las Vegas CC – 1,2,3 Net – North Shore CC (Diaz)
  • Diamond – Wednesday – Cascata – 2 Net – New Berlin Hills GC (Grossman)

In addition, the event also featured daily low professional stableford events. Earning the win in those competitions were:

A big thank you goes out to our event partners, The Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley (Vince Suter), TaylorMade Golf (Steve Ploch & Hunter Mahler), and adidas Golf (Matt Flaten). They are a key part of the event and the WPGA values everything they do to enhance the trip.

The 2019 WPGA Las Vegas Pro-Am came to a close this past Thursday after a great week of golf, camaraderie and plenty of other fun.   The sold out field of 250 players were treated to rounds at Cascata, Bear’s Best and Rio Secco GC, while enjoying the surroundings of MGM Grand as the host hotel.   The week was also kicked off by a terrific Morgan Stanley Welcome Party at TopGolf Las Vegas on Sunday.

Although the golf rounds featured some breezy and cool conditions the weather could not dampen the spirits of the attendees.  Navigating the challenging weather the best was the squad of Austin Gaugert along with Hidden Glen GC members Travis Dowden, Randy Esenberg, Sean Esenberg and Don Wakeman.   The fivesome was able to card a 45-under-par 395 total over the course of the three days.  They set the tone for the week with their day one win at Cascata with an impressive 22-under-par 122 in the two net format.  With follow up performances of a tie for third and an a tie for sixth in group A, they did just enough to earn a two shot win over the High Cliff GC Corey Feller led team.  Finishing five shots back in third place overall was the Bishops Bay CC team with Head PGA Professional John Shipshock.

In addition to the overall team event the tournament also featured daily team contests.   Besides the aforementioned win by the Hidden Glen GC fivesome on day one for group A, the other winners were,

Group B – Wednesday – Rio Secco – 1 Net, 1 Gross – Chenequa CC (Bill Graham)

Group A – Tuesday – Rio Secco GC – Corey Feller
Group A – Wednesday – Bear’s Best – Jim Schuman
Group B – Monday – Bear’s Best – Mick Smith

Another fantastic week of golf, fun and camaraderie was enjoyed by the field of the WPGA Las Vegas Pro-Am this past week. The 240 attendees were greeted with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 70s as they teed it up for rounds of golf at Reflection Bay GC, Spanish Trail CC (Canyon/Lakes) and SouthShore GC. Away from the course they enjoyed New York New York as their host hotel, and started their week with a fun evening at Hard Rock Live with the Morgan Stanley Welcome Party.

On the competition side of things it was Naga-Waukee GC PGA Teaching Professional Kurt Mantyla, along with amateurs Brad Bayerlein, Peter Haise, Brett Swanson and Ken Schinner of The Legend Clubs capturing the overall team title. The hot play for the winning squad started on Monday during the first round and continued all the way until the end. They posted daily finishes of 1st, a tie for 3rd and finally another 1st within their group.

The fivesome entered the final round with just a one shot lead over two teams within group B. That lead quickly grew as they played an impressive round in the 1,2,3 net best ball format at Reflection Bay GC. On a day where the wind was the biggest challenge the squad piled up 13 net birdies, 2 net eagles and six natural birdies from Mantyla. The impressive play resulted in a 20-under-par 132 total and a five shot win in the daily format.

Combined with their two other daily scores they carded a 54-hole total of 55-under-par 383. The 383 score was good enough to provide them a 7 shot win and is the lowest mark by a winning team since 2007.

The winning team was truly shown the way by their team professional as Mantyla earned the top spot in the low professional stableford game on two of three days and a tie for 2nd on the other day.

Finishing as the runner-up team was the Eddie Terasa led North Hills CC team of Rick Buser, Mike Lee, Dave Schuelke and Levi Lura with their 390 total, the lowest within group A. Just one shot behind the North Hills CC team in third place was the North Shore CC fivesome of Jason Rasmussen, John Barrett, Paul Clemins, David Teplin and Jeff Stephany.

The Wisconsin PGA would like to send out a big thank you to our three event partners that helped make it a fantastic week. The trio of Nike Golf (Chris Hammond), Morgan Stanley (Vince Suter) and TaylorMade Golf (Steve Ploch & Eric Gitter) teamed up to really enhance the event and provide a great experience for all the attendees.

The 240 attendees teed it up for rounds of golf at Reflection Bay GC, Rio Secco GC and SouthShore GC, while enjoying New York New York as their host hotel and casino. The participants and their guests also had a fantastic kickoff to the week as they were greeted with the Morgan Stanley Welcome Party at Hard Rock Live on Monday evening.

The competition throughout the week featured six different daily team winners, plenty of diversity amongst the top finishers in the professional stableford events and an impressive final round by the champions to seal the deal. The daily team winners featured wins by the Michael Crowley led Morningstar GC squad on Tuesday, the Brad Peck led Nakoma GC team in round two and finally the Andy Runkel fivesome from the The Bog for group A. In group B it was the Andrew Troyanek team from Tuckaway CC in round one, James Anderson led Westmoor CC squad on Wednesday and the Ryan Helminen Ridgeway CC fivesome on day three that captured wins.

For Helminen and his amateur partners Kerry Baugher, Todd Ostrom, Dan Thome and Mike Welsing it was the final day run that propelled them to their first WPGA Nike Golf Las Vegas Pro-Am title. In the 1 net, 1 gross best ball format they were able to post an impressive 18-under-par 126 total at Rio Secco GC. The score was good enough to win the daily event by six shots and put them three clear of the Nakoma GC squad in the overall event. Each and every day the team had a better daily finish en route to the title, as on day one they finished in a tie for sixth, day two in second place and finally the win on day three. The finishes led them to a 47-under-par 391 total for the three rounds of play.

The professional stableford competitions for the week in group A featured wins by Michael Crowley (Tuesday at SS), Joe Leonard (Wednesday at RS) and Kyle Kunash (Thursday at RB). On the other side of the draw it was Andrew Troyanek, Doug Mortola and Charlie Brown tying on day one (Tuesday at RB), James Anderson and Ryan Helminen on day two (Wednesday at SS) and Ryan Helminen putting up an impressive 28 points on day three (Thursday at RS) to grab the top spot.

The WPGA would also like to express its appreciation to Financial Advisor, Vince Suter of Morgan Stanley. Vince lent an important helping hand to the event, as he supported both the Morgan Stanley Welcome Party and the daily on course hole contests.

Lastly, the WPGA would like to thank our host hotel, New York New York and our host courses, Reflection Bay GC, Rio Secco GC and SouthShore GC for all their hospitality and hard work towards our event.
