The WPGA with the help of Nike Golf wrapped up the 2017 WPGA Las Vegas Pro-Am this past Friday. Another fantastic week was had by the sold out field that made the trip out west. The 240 attendees teed it up for rounds of golf at Reflection Bay GC, Rio Secco GC and SouthShore GC, while enjoying New York New York as their host hotel and casino. The participants and their guests also had a fantastic kickoff to the week as they were greeted with the Morgan Stanley Welcome Party at Hard Rock Live on Monday evening.
The competition throughout the week featured six different daily team winners, plenty of diversity amongst the top finishers in the professional stableford events and an impressive final round by the champions to seal the deal. The daily team winners featured wins by the Michael Crowley led Morningstar GC squad on Tuesday, the Brad Peck led Nakoma GC team in round two and finally the Andy Runkel fivesome from the The Bog for group A. In group B it was the Andrew Troyanek team from Tuckaway CC in round one, James Anderson led Westmoor CC squad on Wednesday and the Ryan Helminen Ridgeway CC fivesome on day three that captured wins.
For Helminen and his amateur partners Kerry Baugher, Todd Ostrom, Dan Thome and Mike Welsing it was the final day run that propelled them to their first WPGA Nike Golf Las Vegas Pro-Am title. In the 1 net, 1 gross best ball format they were able to post an impressive 18-under-par 126 total at Rio Secco GC. The score was good enough to win the daily event by six shots and put them three clear of the Nakoma GC squad in the overall event. Each and every day the team had a better daily finish en route to the title, as on day one they finished in a tie for sixth, day two in second place and finally the win on day three. The finishes led them to a 47-under-par 391 total for the three rounds of play.
The professional stableford competitions for the week in group A featured wins by Michael Crowley (Tuesday at SS), Joe Leonard (Wednesday at RS) and Kyle Kunash (Thursday at RB). On the other side of the draw it was Andrew Troyanek, Doug Mortola and Charlie Brown tying on day one (Tuesday at RB), James Anderson and Ryan Helminen on day two (Wednesday at SS) and Ryan Helminen putting up an impressive 28 points on day three (Thursday at RS) to grab the top spot.
The WPGA would like to thank all the participants for attending and helping the event sell out for the second straight season. A great deal of gratitude also goes out to our title sponsor, Nike Golf. The company was well represented as Inside Sales Manager, Andy Lowrey, Inside Sales Representatives, Chris Hammond and Mike Neal and Green Grass Brand Specialist, Mike Willey all made the trip in for the event. The representatives did a great job of dressing up the event and also putting together a nice gift package for all the attendees. The 2017 edition marked the 14th straight season that Nike Golf has supported the WPGA Las Vegas Pro-Am.
The WPGA would also like to express its appreciation to Financial Advisor, Vince Suter of Morgan Stanley. Vince lent a important helping hand to the event, as he supported both the Morgan Stanley Welcome Party and the daily on course hole contests.
Lastly the WPGA would like to thank our host hotel, New York New York and our host courses, Reflection Bay GC, Rio Secco GC and SouthShore GC for all their hospitality and hard work towards our event.
